Agility & Speed Drills
Hockey agility is about edges, transitions, and acceleration in small spaces. These drills work on or off the ice.
On-Ice Agility
Tight Turn Drill (5 Minutes)
- Skate to each faceoff circle and make a full tight turn around it
- Alternate clockwise and counter-clockwise
- Focus: low stance, deep knee bend, outside edge pressure
- 4 laps of the rink, hitting every circle
Transition Drill (5 Minutes)
- Skate forward to the blue line, transition to backward at the line (pivot)
- Skate backward to the red line, pivot forward again
- Repeat across the full ice
- 6 reps — focus on smooth, fast transitions without losing speed
Crossover Speed Drill (3 Minutes)
- Skate the circles using only crossovers — no straight strides
- 3 clockwise, 3 counter-clockwise per circle
- This builds edge confidence and lateral speed
Off-Ice Agility (Driveway/Garage)
Lateral Shuffles (2 Minutes)
- Set two cones 10 feet apart, shuffle side to side touching each cone
- Stay low, quick feet, chest up
- 30 seconds on, 15 seconds rest, repeat 3 times
Box Jumps (3 Minutes)
- Jump onto a sturdy step or box (12–18 inches)
- Step down, repeat. Focus on soft landing, explosive jump.
- 3 sets of 8
Single-Leg Balance (2 Minutes)
- Stand on one foot for 30 seconds, eyes closed
- This builds the proprioception needed for skating edges
- 3 reps each leg
Hockey is a game of edges. The player who can turn tighter, transition faster, and accelerate quicker wins positioning battles all over the ice.
