Shooting & Passing Basics
Wrist shot (the first shot to learn)
- Puck/ball starts at the middle of the blade
- Pull the puck back slightly, then sweep forward
- Roll the wrists to snap the blade over — this creates the release
- Follow through pointing at the target
- Start close to a target (garage wall, net, rebounder). Accuracy before power.
Passing
- Forehand pass: sweep the puck with a flat blade, follow through toward the target
- Receiving: give a target with the blade flat on the ice, cushion the pass (soft hands)
- Backhand pass: same concept, opposite side of the blade
Off-ice shooting
- Use a shooting pad or smooth surface
- Green biscuits or weighted pucks build wrist strength
- A net or rebounder makes practice more efficient
The wrist shot scores more goals than any other shot type. Master it before worrying about slap shots.
