Shooting Drills
The wrist shot is the most important shot in hockey. It’s accurate, quick to release, and can be done from anywhere. Master this before anything else.
The Wrist Shot (Foundation)
- Puck starts near the middle of the blade
- Pull the puck back slightly, then push forward while rolling your wrists over
- Follow through — the blade should point at the target at the end
- Weight transfers from back foot to front foot
Start close to the net (10 feet), focus on accuracy first, then step back.
10-Minute Shooting Workout
1) Target Practice (4 Minutes)
- Set up targets in the four corners of the net (cones, water bottles, or shooter tutors)
- 5 wrist shots at each corner
- Count your hits out of 20
2) Quick Release (3 Minutes)
- Receive a pass (or self-feed), shoot within 1 second
- The goal is reducing the time between receiving and shooting
- 10 reps — speed matters more than power here
3) Snap Shot (3 Minutes)
- No big wind-up — snap your wrists and shoot off the pass
- Mid-height target, 15 feet out
- 10 reps each side
Off-Ice Shooting
You can practice shooting at home with:
- Green biscuit (off-ice training puck) + shooting pad
- Stick and ball in the driveway/garage
- Shooting tarp hung in the garage (target holes cut out)
Track your accuracy. How many out of 20 hit the corners? Write it down. Improvement over weeks is the goal.
