Common Calls
| Call | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Icing | Puck shot from behind center ice past the goal line without being touched. Faceoff comes back. |
| Offsides | An attacking player crossed the blue line before the puck. Faceoff outside the zone. |
| Tripping | 2-minute minor penalty |
| Hooking | Using stick to impede opponent — 2 minutes |
| Slashing | Swinging stick at opponent — 2 minutes |
| Roughing | Unnecessary physical contact — 2 minutes |
| High-sticking | Stick above the shoulders contacts opponent — 2 or 4 minutes |
| Cross-checking | Pushing with stick held in both hands — 2 minutes |
Power Play & Penalty Kill
- When a player gets a penalty, their team plays short-handed (4 vs 5) for 2 minutes
- The team with more players is on the power play
- If they score, the penalty ends (for minor penalties)
Periods
- 3 periods (not quarters or halves)
- Youth: 10-12 minutes per period
- High school: 15 minutes
- NHL: 20 minutes
Don't yell at the refs. Youth hockey refs are often teenagers. They're learning too.
