Defensive Concepts
Good defense in hockey is about positioning, communication, and never leaving the front of the net unprotected.
Defensive Zone Coverage
Man-to-Man
Each defender picks up a specific attacker. Simple but can be beaten by movement and screens.
Zone Defense
Each defender covers an area of the ice. The focus is on protecting the slot (the area directly in front of the net).
Box (Penalty Kill)
When short-handed, four players form a box shape. The goal is to force shots from the outside (where the goalie can see them) and block passing lanes to the slot.
Key Defensive Principles
- Sticks in passing lanes — even if you can’t reach the puck, your stick can intercept a pass
- Gap control — stay close enough to the attacker that they can’t skate past you
- Backcheck hard — when your team loses the puck, sprint back to defense immediately
- Protect the slot — nothing good happens when an attacker has the puck in front of your net
- Box out — position your body between the attacker and the net, especially on rebounds
The simplest defensive rule: Stay between your man and the net. If every defender does this, scoring chances dry up.
